Christian Ministries Department

Rev. Jason McCary, Assistant Professor
Chair of the School of Christian Ministries

Emmanuel University Christian Ministries Department

The Department of Christian Ministries (SCM) exists to teach, train, and disciple emerging leaders of God’s Kingdom within the context of relationships and community.  We believe that God’s kingdom needs people who not only acquire the technical skills for ministry but also are equipped to intelligently engage an ever-increasingly secular culture with the message of the Gospel.  We are committed to the view that preparation for ministry includes the development of ministers as persons, as thinkers, and as doers.  We want to equip you, with the Holy Spirit’s guidance and empowerment, to serve the church, the local community, and various ministries around the world.  We focus on three areas: 1) We want you to gain the knowledge you need help people grow spiritually, 2) We want to help you to become the spiritually and emotionally healthy leader that is able to affectively lead, and 3) We want to provide you with the practical training and experiences that will enable you to enter your future ministry position with confidence.

Department Details

As a Christian Ministries Major, we offer a BS and a BA degree that allow a student to pursue a concentration of their choosing.  Everyone shares a common core of Christian Ministries classes that includes biblical, theological, and practical ministry classes.   In addition to this core, you then can focus in one of four chosen areas: missions, youth and children, general pastoral ministries, or Bible and theology.  These concentrations offer you the opportunity to specialize in an area of your calling and interests.  Each of these concentrations has classes dedicated to that concentration.

Students may also choose another degree path, the BS in Worship Ministry.  The Bachelor of Science in Worship Ministry degree is designed to prepare students for the practical ministry of music and the worship arts in the context of contemporary evangelical and Pentecostal-Charismatic local churches. Students obtaining this degree will receive instruction in worship music theory, ear training, voice, piano, and guitar; they will develop a practical theology of Christian worship based on church music history and philosophy; and they will study applied methods for team building and disciple-making in the context of the worship team as well as service planning, song selection, audio/video/lighting technology and techniques, rehearsal techniques, and congregational worship practices. Upon completion, students will be prepared to serve the local church in a variety of pastoral roles including worship pastor, associate pastor, discipleship pastor, or music director.

Our faculty love to teach because we love Jesus Christ, we want to be Spirit-led and empowered, and we desire to equip, train and release future leaders into God’s Kingdom. We also love students. You may find yourself hanging out at one of our houses, kayaking down a local river, or praying over one another for deeper encounters with God.
