The Missing Piece – EC Student Spotlight on Tailor Scotland
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28
As a high school student and young mother, Tailor Scotland felt lost. Adopted at a young age and struggling with pain from her past, Tailor didn’t know where to turn. A few of her teachers saw her potential and gave her a piece of advice that she will never forget.
With God, all things are possible.
Now, as a married, mother of three, Tailor felt called into education so that she could impact young lives, just like hers was.
“I decided to enroll at Emmanuel because it was close to home and represented what I stood for and believed in,” Tailor remembers.
Instantly, she knew she made the right choice.
“I was surrounded by so much love, support, and encouragement,” she said. “I knew what I wanted before I came to EC, I was on the right path, but my life began to make sense when I came here. All of the pain and struggles I faced earlier in life, my professors and classmates helped connect the pieces I’ve been struggling to connect my entire life.”
With their help, Tailor could see God’s purpose for her life.
With plans to graduate from Emmanuel’s School of Education in May, Taylor looks forward to taking what she’s learned and helping students who need guidance as she did.
She is confident that she will head into the classroom prepared for success because of the support she received from her professors.

“Because we’re a smaller school, we have had that one-on-one time with our professors,” she said. “When you have teachers who you can tell support you, it prepares you so much more because you can open up to them about your fears and worries and they can help direct you.”
One area that Tailor has had to work on is time management, as she juggles being a full-time student, wife, and mother.
“At first, it was hard,” she remembered. “I wanted to be involved in everything, both with my kids and on campus. It took a year for me to adjust, and I found that you have to find a balance.”
Tailor has found that balance, oftentimes waiting until her children go to bed to focus on homework.
On campus, Tailor has found a community in her Education cohort.
“I’ve made some good friends at Emmanuel,” she said. “Before I came here, life was all about my family, and it still is. Coming here has allowed me to open up, grow, trust and love on my community, too.”
What advice would Tailor give to mothers looking to go back to school?
“If you form a relationship with God and figure out what your purpose is through him, you can be anything you want to be,” she said. “It’s all about balance. It’s about putting God first, family second, and schoolwork will fit into place. If it wasn’t for God, I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing. God will make your career path clear for you if it is truly what you are called to do, he will find a way.”
With God, all things are possible.
This was a piece of advice given to Tailor Scotland at a time in her life when she felt lost. It led her to trust God and His calling for her life, to be an educator. It also led her to Emmanuel College, where she believes she found her missing piece.
