Shelton Named 2019-20 Governor’s Teaching Fellow

Anna Shelton, an associate professor at Emmanuel College, was selected as a 2019-2020 Governor’s Teaching Fellow.

Shelton has taught graphic design at Emmanuel for 6 years and serves as the college’s creative director and yearbook advisor.

As one of only 17 faculty members in this year’s class, Shelton was selected after a competitive application process based on teaching experience, interest in continuing instructional and professional development, ability to make a positive impact on a college campus, and strong commitment to participate and complete a project related to a specific course discipline. This year’s project challenged fellows to create and teach an interactive lecture with a professor from a completely different field.

 Shelton’s project will be presented on July 22 in collaboration with Omar Villanueva, a chemistry professor from Georgia Gwinnett College. The lecture will focus on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010 with regards to the chemical impact on the environment and the implications of the negative impact it brought to the BP brand. 

“It has been an honor to be chosen as a Governor’s Teaching Fellow with the University of Georgia this year. I have met many brilliant and creative professors from all over the state. We have gained insight, grown together as professors and challenged teaching traditions in order to engage future students and meet the demands of changing times.” 

The Georgia Teaching Fellows program is offered annually by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia, and since it’s inception 25 years ago by then Governor Zell Miller, 625 Teaching Fellows have been selected from 70 public and private college campuses statewide, representing more than 80 disciplines. 

After living in Atlanta for seven years and Austin, TX for four years, Shelton and her husband P.W. currently live in Royston with their two children.
